Emerald Ash Borer

Emerald Ash BorerThe Emerald Ash Borer (Agrilus planipennis) is a wood boring beetle that attacks Ash trees.  Adult borers are ¼ inch to ½ inch in length and metallic green in color.  First discovered in Michigan in 2002, EAB is responsible for tens of millions of Ash tree deaths in several states.  The EAB was first discovered in Kane County IL in 2006 and has since been rapidly infesting and destroying Ash trees throughout Illinois.  To view a list of confirmed EAB cases in Illinois towns click here.

Damage is caused to trees primarily from the Emerald Ash Borer larvae.  These larvae feed on the inner bark of a tree, creating S galleries that prevent water and nutrients from moving through the tree tissue.  Over time, the tree cannot get nutrients and will die.  Generally speaking, high populations of EAB can kill a small tree within 1-2 years of becoming infested and large trees in 3-4 years.  Once a tree is heavily infested with EAB, removal is the only option.
